Gir Lion's Paw Resort - Gir National Park
The Asiatic Lion (Panthera Leo Persica) population is threatened. Only 18 animals of this subspecies were discovered in Northern Greece across most of western and central Asia in 1893. With the rarity of this species in mind, wildlife organizations decided to safeguard Asiatic Lions by establishing a refuge in 1970.
The Nawab of Junagarh was the first to protect this endangered species. Later, because of the Gujarat Forest Department's strict conservation and care, the population of Asiatic Lions increased from 284 in 1990 to 200 in 1938. Gir was designated a protected area in 1965, and the sanctuary was extended in 1974. Gir National Park was established in the center of the sanctuary in 1975.
